What inspired you to kickstart your fitness journey? Since back surgery at age 40….i have always looked for ways to stay strong and fit…i was not that athletic before that. But thru my rehab i realized the importance of being physically strong and to keep moving. Also i had an athletic daughter, and i wanted her to be proud of me
What's been the biggest hurdle you've faced along the way? Not letting the mental thoughts of “i can’t do this” get in the way. Saying “i can’t” is easier for me to say than “i can”. just getting up everyday and doing something is important, it clears my mind for the day and makes me feel good about myself.
Have you encountered any new challenges in maintaining your fitness routine and how have you overcome them? Yes! Covid was a huge challenge for many reasons, but the fitness and stress management piece was a hurdle that required me to be more creative. Working out alone at home was not motivating for me so I transitioned to walking and biking outside. I had to get used to less intense workouts since I am not great at pushing myself without an instructor there to encourage me. As soon as the outdoor classes were offered I bounced back, but the lack of community and not being in a class where I have to stay for the full time was challenging.
Any pearls of wisdom for those just starting out? Go slow, lean on your friends, and keep going. And don’t be afraid of doing the modifications for any move, they help in beginning to make things click. It’s a whole new language. Also, try a few different teachers and lean on ones that get you.
What keeps your fitness fire burning bright? Humm fitness fire…… Just to get stronger, more balanced and healthier.
Any unexpected perks or benefits from your journey? I have always been afraid of falling. The older we get, recovery from any fall is harder. So during Pilates, I try to focus on the muscles that keep me from not falling and focus on tightening everything up so I remain balanced. That is hard for me. That continued balance helps me in all areas mental and physical.
How has your mindset shifted since you began this journey? I believe it has helped me stay in the moment.
In what ways has The Studio (MDR) been instrumental in your transformation? I started MDR before the pandemic, then did virtual classes, then slowly came back. I was nervous to come back, what would I remember? What had I forgotten? The journey has been interesting and I feel much more connected and stronger now. Everyone has helped…not always easy….good days and bad. But each time I leave the studio I am always happy and grateful that i spent those 45 minutes doing something healthy and positive for myself.
